More thoughts on Oscar fashion

Monday 28 February 2011

I just watched the Oscars red carpet show (the live show was at 3a.m. Dubai time so I'm watching reruns), and I have to add a look, which is definitely my favorite of the night.

Camila Alves (Matthew McConaughey's girlfriend) in Kaufman Franco - Wow.

Oscar Red Carpet Review

Hollywood's (and one of the Fashion industry's) biggest night just took place.  The 83rd Academy Awards at the Kodak theatre in L.A.  Which only means one thing, it's time to play 'Fashion Police' again.

Sandra Bullock in Vera Wang - LOVE this. Definitely my favorite look of the night - strong, modern and still very glamorous.

Penelope Cruz in L'Wren Scott - This is terrible. She looked tacky with that flame inspired design. And seriously, didn't she JUST have a baby? Like yesterday? Ukh, I don't even have a figure like that now, a year and a half after having mine.

Natalie Portman in Rodarte - In case it wasn't obvious from previous posts, I love her. She's super talented, classy and absolutely stunning. The Best Actress looked great as usual, how cute are the accessories?

Amy Adams in L'Wren Scott - I like this. This is not an easy cut to wear, but she pulled it off. I think the deep blue keeps it looking modern and the accessories give that extra 'umph'. Note to my husband: I like that necklace.

Halle Berry in Marchesa - I'm bored of this kind of gown, been done way too many times. Oh and I'm bored of Halle's hair.

Michelle Williams in Chanel - Didn't she wear this before?  I'm sure I've seen her in something like this at least once before. Not the kinda thought you want in people's heads at the Oscars Michelle!! This dress is so unflattering, it's a shame.

Gwyneth Paltrow in Calvin Klein Collection - How cool is this?! It's so original and sexy. Love it. Love her bronze makeup combination too.

Mila Kunis in Elie Saab - I'm not sure how I feel about this dress. I hate the color, but I kind of like the vintage twist. Maybe if it were in black? Or a dark purple?

Anne Hathaway in Valentino - This is pretty. Classic, with a nice twist. She reminds me of Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman... I mean that in a good way.

Cate Blanchett in Givenchy - Is that a Roman shield? Is it an antique dining chair??

Scarlett Johansson in Dolce & Gabbana - I'm totally in love with the latest Dolce & Gabbana collection, so I'm totally in love with this gown. The color rocks. Scarlett, what's up with that tattoo on your arm?

Hilary Swank in Gucci Premier - She looks like a reptile slithering down the red carpet.

Marisa Tomei in Charles James - This is so bad! It looks like she made this at home... an hour before showing up.  Or maybe it's her old prom dress? On a more positive note, does this woman ever grow older? She looks 19!! She's 46!!!

Model-Morphosis

Tuesday 22 February 2011

It's total Fashion Week(s) fever at the moment, so I thought I would share this really cool link. Photographer Greg Kessler gives T Magazine readers an insight on how models are transformed for the runway.

If you go to the site and drag the orange bar left or right you will see the model transform. Fancy!

What I fancy this week

Wednesday 16 February 2011

1. Kirsten multi-strap suede tote by Alexander Wang. Doesn't it just look so soft? Can't you just imagine this with 700 different outfits? I want this. Now.
2. Sleeveless knit dress by MM6 Maison Martin Margeila.  This is the color of the moment, and I love the simplicity of this dress.

3. Margo lace-up platform pumps by Elizabeth and James.  This is quickly becoming one of my favorite brands.  Very cool clothes and accessories and reasonably priced.  And they have cute stuff like this.

4. Maxi summer dress by H&M - Soooo pretty!

5. Letour floral perfect shirt by J.Crew - I really like this shirt.  It's simple and kind of preppy, which then works quite nicely with a pair of sneakers or if you want to dress it up a tad more, a pair of oxfords.  Rolled up sleeves is a must, otherwise it looks a little too childish.

6. Lissy boxy swing dress in paisley shirting by Chloe Sevigny and Opening Ceremony.  This is so cute.  The shape is stylish and easy and it can be worn with black tights or as shown.  It's also available in Leopard, so I'll have one of those too.

7. Sleeveless denim shirt by Helmut Lang - This is a great addition to any wardrobe.  Add a few chunky accessories and you're gold.

BAFTA & Grammy Fashion

Monday 14 February 2011

Two big awards events on the same night... BAFTAs at the Royal Opera House in London and The Grammy's in Staples Center in Los Angeles.  I could barely keep up!

Some of the looks in London:
Emma Watson in Valentino - as much as I love this girl and her style, I hate this look.  She just looks like a little girl trying on her mom's old gown.

Amy Adams in Elie Saab - she looks very pretty in this 70's inspired dress.  This is glitter done right.

Jessica Alba in Atelier Versace - Sigh.

Emma Stone in Lanvin.  I LOVE this two tone gown.  Simplicity can be very hot.

Thandie Newton in Monique Lhuillier.  This is a bit much for me.  The dramatic cut, the color and the pattern all combined make me just want to add a bow on her hair or something.

Eva Green in Tom Ford - this just made me very sad.  Something went very wrong here... I can't pinpoint what though.  Ugly dress? Yes.  Strange hair with unflattering roots? Perhaps.  No accessories to save the look? Indeed.

Natasha McElhone in Escada - WHY WHY WHY the gloves?!  I don't care if its freezing in London, there is no excuse.

These are some of the Grammy's looks.  Of course the Grammy's are more about rock and roll, disco balls and well... Lady Gaga, so they should be and are more "colorful". But some looks are downright off.

Jennifer Lopez in Emilio Pucci - She's back with a vengeance, and she looks great.

Rihanna in Jean Paul Gaultier - If you could've seen my face when I first saw this.  She looks like a Stepford wife that got attacked by tulle, then had some odd bug eat through it.  If a friend of mine ever wanted to wear something like this, I would literally slap her.

Esperanza Spalding in (unknown) - Seriously am I missing something? What's going on?  I'm dizzy.  At least she's super talented. But the shoes! I need a break.

Lady Gaga in ummm....  Egg?  At least we got a hint of what planet she's from.

Katy Perry in Giorgio Armani - This is beginning to look more like some odd costume party.  I'm more concerned with the designers who are producing this stuff.  BTW her wings did light up, you know, just in case you were wondering.
I give up.
